Istanbul Airport Suicide Bombings Has LAX On Alert

LOS ANGELES, CA - In light of an apparent suicide bombing that killed at least 28 people at the airport in Istanbul, Turkey, local authorities said Tuesday there are no credible threats against Los Angeles International Airport, but security officials were remaining vigilant.

Los Angeles Airport Police said there were no reports of flight cancellations or delays at LAX as a result of the attack.

"The safety and security of passengers, airport workers and visitors is the number one priority of Los Angeles Airport Police Division," according to airport police. "In light of the violent attack at Ataturk Airport in Istanbul, Turkey, and the upcoming July 4th holiday travel period, we remain vigilant in our mission.

"There have been no credible threats made to Los Angeles International Airport. We are constantly assessing intelligence and events, both domestically and abroad," police said.

Police said the attack should again serve as a reminder for people visiting the airport to report any suspicious activity by calling Airport Police dispatch at (310) 646-7911, calling 911 or the iWatch hotline at (888) A- THREAT.

"Airport Police constantly reviews the security measures we have in place, and will enhance and improve security as needed," according to police. "As part of our layered approach to security at LAX, we conduct random checkpoints at airport entrances."

The agency noted that there are more than 48,000 credentialed employees at the airport that are considered "48,000 sets of eyes capable of observing behavior that is uncharacteristic or suspicious and reporting that information to airport police, who can respond quickly to investigate."
