Man Dies In Gardena Shooting; Second Fatal Shooting In 2 Days

A motive for the shooting was not immediately clear, but it does not appear to be related to a shooting on Tuesday night, police said.

GARDENA, CA -- A man was gunned down Wednesday in an alley in Gardena, marking the second fatal shooting in that city in as many days.

The shooting was reported about 11:30 a.m. in an alley in the 2700 block of 141st Place, near Rosecrans Avenue, according to Gardena Police Lt. Steve Prendergast.

Arriving officers found a man on the ground who had been struck multiple times by gunfire, said Gardena Police Lt. Mike Saffell.

The victim, identified by Gardena police as 28-year-old Demetrious Thomas of Hawthorne, was pronounced dead at the scene, Saffell said.

A motive for the shooting was not immediately clear, but it does not appear to be related to a shooting on Tuesday night in the 1200 block of Rosecrans Avenue, near Budlong Avenue that left one man dead and two others wounded, Prendergast said.
