Manhattan Beach School District Gives Layoff Notices To Dozens Of Workers: Report

MANHATTAN BEACH, CA — As many as 60 Manhattan Beach Unified School District employees could soon be let go due to budget issues, according to a new report from the Daily Breeze.

About 40 certificated positions could be cut, including jobs like special education, math and science instructors; substitute teachers; and counselors and specialists, the newspaper reported.

Also on the chopping block are 15 classified positions, which include support staff like assistants, secretaries, custodians, bus drivers, food service employees and information technology workers.

The remaining positions are administrative roles like program directors and principals.

Without reductions to the budget, the school district said that it anticipates being more than $6 million in debt by the 2027-28 school year. With the planned reductions, however, the district projects a surplus of more than $8 million by then.

Manhattan Beach Unified Teachers’ Association President Aaron Kofahl told the Breeze that the potential layoffs are "demoralizing" and "depressing" and that teachers were in tears when the layoff notices were handed out.

Those who received pink slips this month are expected to find April 29 whether they’ll receive final layoff notices.
