Mira Costa Freshman Wins Boys 18 Draw
Matt Sumen, 15, cruises to United States Tennis Association satellite tournament victory in Hermosa Beach.
Freshman Mustang Matt Sumen had been having some difficulty lately closing out his tennis matches, but the 15-year-old had no such troubles on Saturday in winning the boys 18 draw at the 10th annual Hermosa Beach Tennis Junior Satellite Classic.
Sumen beat Garrick Liou of Granada Hills 6-4, 6-2 in the tournament semifinals and then took out Milan Suzuki of Redondo Beach to win the title, 6-1, 6-0.
''I kept playing him deep, with deep top-spin, and he eventually made an error,'' Sumen said of the tournament final. ''I took possession of each point, pretty much, and the couple points that I was on defense I was able to turn it to offense. I was usually on the offensive mode.''
