Sashi Fundraiser Benefits Local Nonprofit and Japan Relief

Manhattan Beach's hip sushi lounge raises money at inaugural Hanami Festival for the Jimmy Miller Memorial Foundation and Japan aid.

Crowds packed downtown's Sashi Sushi & Sake Lounge to dine for a good cause Sunday evening. At $40 per plate, all of the proceeds went to Japan relief and the Jimmy Miller Memorial Foundation, a Manhattan Beach-based nonprofit organization that teaches healing through oceanic activities.

Sashi's first-ever Hanami Festival featured a street-fair style of cuisine. Hanami, which literally translates as "flower viewing," is celebrated in Japan by admiring spring's abundant cherry blossoms -- often while picnicking. Sunday's offerings included octopus dumplings, Japanese pancakes, and various sushi and sashimi prepared with eco-friendly Kindai Tuna.
