South Bay Councilmember Elected To National Board

He's the first California beach city representative elected to the National League of Cities Board of Directors.

MANHATTAN BEACH, CA – Manhattan Beach City Councilmember Richard Montgomery was elected to serve on the National League of Cities (NLC) Board of Directors at the NLC's Annual City summit in Charlotte, North Carolina – Manhattan Beach is the first California beach city to have a representative elected.

“I am proud to be one of the few directors from California and the only one from a small, coastal community. I will promote the value of our South Bay region and the instrumental role small-town communities like Manhattan Beach play in the health of our state and nation,” Montgomery said.

Working in partnership with 49 state municipal leagues, the NLC is dedicated to helping city leaders build better communities by serving as a resource to and an advocate for the more than 19,000 cities, villages and towns it represents. The mission of the National League of Cities is to strengthen and promote cities as centers of opportunity, leadership and governance, the press release said.

“With the election of Los Angeles City Councilmember Joe Buscaino to 2nd Vice President of the NLC, the southern California region will be well represented," Montgomery said. "I extend my congratulations to him and I look forward to working together with the entire 2018 NLC Officers and Board of Directors."

The NLC is governed by a board of directors that is comprised of four officers, eight state league directors, seven advocacy committee chairs, and forty at-large members. Councilmember Montgomery was elected to a two-year term and will serve as an at-large member beginning his duties in January of 2018. The NLC Board of Directors focuses on three broad roles: fiduciary oversight, strategic planning and thinking and implementation of policies and activities to support and advance the NLC mission and aspirations.

Montgomery is a 29-year resident and local business owner that currently serves on the Manhattan Beach City Council. Montgomery is currently serving his third term as City Councilmember and volunteers in numerous community organizations around the City.
