South Bay by Jackie Weekend Guide July 4, 2019

Looking for something to do here in the South Bay?

Happy, happy Fourth of July everybody! Ya gotta love a four-day, summer holiday, weekend! My husband and I have a big day ahead of us, starting with a Strand cruise to a friend’s house party in El Porto. We head out mid-morning, before the Strand gets too crowded…..the ride back is another story. It’s quite the spectacle with a huge police presence – mounted police (horseback and ATVs) on the beach, law enforcement helicopters buzzing the coastline, and all sorts of tactical equipment and vehicles on display the entire length of the Strand (last year I saw a Bearcat!) – throw in several thousand revelers and you’re going nowhere fast on a bicycle. (Local’s tip: take the alley!) After dropping the bikes at home, we’ll head south to Terranea for Music on the Meadows (thinking we might want to Uber to that). We won’t stay for the whole show since we’ll be attending a friend’s roof-top, fireworks viewing party later tonight. There’s no shortage of fantastic, holiday events taking place all over the South Bay today, so get out there and celebrate the birth of our fabulous country! Time for the annual Public Service Announcement! Fireworks are illegal in all South Bay cities, so don’t even think about it. With the ever-present fire danger, this should be a no-brainer, never mind how it freaks out the pets.
The Redondo Beach Night Market is on hiatus tonight due to the holiday. For additional information, visit the Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/nativeharvestevents/.

This summer, Shakespeare by the Sea presents two brand new productions staged at venues throughout the South Bay. Performances of The Comedy of Errors and Henry V will take place during July and August.
· The Comedy of Errors: A classic Shakespearean romp of mistaken identity-it’s mischief and mayhem galore! Two young visitors arrive in the city unaware that their long-lost twins already live there. Over the course of a single day, everything that can go wrong does go wrong: a marriage at breaking point, a missing gold chain, an unpaid debt, and a dubious arrest. It’s mischief and mayhem galore!
· Henry V: Shakespeare’s most patriotic and inspiring play tells of a young King Henry V who seeks to unite his beloved England. After laying claim to French lands and being ridiculed, Henry marches off to war. Although sorely outnumbered, Henry rallies his troops and, at Agincourt, achieves a decisive victory. The schedule for this weekend:
-Sunday, July 7 at 7pm: The Comedy of Errors, New Venue - Civic Center 30940 Hawthorne Blvd, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90275.Huge grassy field with where audience members can place their beach chairs. Blankets a must. Starts out warm/hot, but marine layer floats in by intermission – layered clothing recommended.
-Wednesday, July 10 at 7pm: Henry V
-Thursday, July 11 at 7pm: The Comedy of Errors
-Hermosa Beach – Valley Park, Valley & Gould
The performance is on the other side of the bandshell – on the rolling grassy area directly behind it. Gets a little damp and chilly. Parking is available on the streets surrounding the park, at the elementary school on Gould, and in the surrounding neighborhood. Cement pathways lead you into the park.
Shakespeare by the Sea is a non-profit organization whose mission is to ignite imagination, promote literacy and offer a venue for technical and performing artists to exercise their passion. So grab a few lawn chairs, blankets and a picnic basket and settle in for a theater production by the greatest playwright of all time. These shows are free and open to the public. All seating is on a first come, first serve basis. For additional information, visit the website at http://www.shakespearebythesea.org/.

South Bay residents should avoid moving citrus material this summer due to detection of a harmful citrus tree disease. California residents are being urged to avoid transporting citrus tree material while traveling this summer due to the highest-ever threat of a deadly citrus tree disease called Huanglongbing (HLB). HLB is spread by a tiny insect, the Asian citrus psyllid, as it feeds on citrus tree leaves. The small pest can have devastating consequences to California’s citrus trees – both backyard and commercial – if it is unknowingly transported on citrus tree leaves and stems. While HLB is not harmful to humans or animals, there is no cure for the disease and infected trees will die. Learn more at http://www.CaliforniaCitrusThreat.org.
We’ll be airing reruns of The South Bay Show today and tomorrow. Now is the time to catch up on some of the shows you missed this year! Check out the archives at https://www.southbaybyjackie.com/blog-talk-radio.php.
