Thieves Are Targeting These Cars In Manhattan Beach, Police Warn

MANHATTAN BEACH, CA — Manhattan Beach police are warning residents about a recent uptick in vehicle thefts after five auto thefts were reported in the city in one week. The thieves have targeted Hyundai and Kia vehicles, in particular, according to police.

The five thefts, reported between Aug. 6 and Aug. 12, were the highest weekly total in a review by Patch of Manhattan Beach Police Department crime reports dating back to July 9.

MBPD recorded 10 auto thefts over that five-week period, with half occurring during the most recent week. Seven of the 10 were reported during the latest two weeks.

The weekly totals were zero from July 9-15, three from July 16-22, zero from July 23-29, two from July 30-Aug. 5 and five from Aug. 6-12.

Police did not identify the makes or models of the five vehicles reported stolen during the latest week, but the department specifically warned that the recent uptick has particularly involved Hyundai and Kia vehicles.

MBPD recommended several precautions, including using a steering-wheel lock, making sure vehicle doors are locked before walking away and keeping valuables out of sight.

Police also suggested considering an aftermarket alarm or immobilizer and a hidden GPS tracker that could help locate a vehicle if it is stolen. Hyundai and Kia owners were advised to check with the manufacturers for security software updates or theft-deterrent programs available for their particular vehicles.

The latest weekly report also showed 14 thefts, five vehicle burglaries and four residential burglaries between Aug. 6 and Aug. 12. Police reported no robberies or business burglaries during the period.

MBPD recorded 914 calls for service, 22 arrests, 66 reports taken and 16 traffic collisions during the week.
