MARINA DEL REY, CA — A cat rescued from a burning van in Marina del Rey was revived by a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy and firefighters Sunday morning before being reunited with its owner, authorities said.

Deputy Lopez of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Marina del Rey Station responded around 11 a.m. Sunday to reports of smoke coming from a van in the 14100 block of Panay Way, according to the department.

When Lopez arrived, firefighters had pulled an unconscious cat from the smoke-filled vehicle. The animal was lying unresponsive in the parking lot.

Lopez requested oxygen from the Los Angeles County Fire Department and began administering first aid to the cat while firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze and searched the van for additional occupants and animals.

Once the fire was extinguished, firefighters joined Lopez in treating the cat, which regained consciousness a short time later, according to the sheriff's department.

Deputies and firefighters transported the cat to a nearby veterinary facility for further treatment. The animal was later reunited with its owner.

The sheriff's department praised Lopez for his quick response and thanked county firefighters for their role in the rescue.
