London, Bishop Montgomery Runs Past St Bernards, 42-14

Bishop Montgomery, behind Carter London's 117 yards and two touchdowns uses running game to slow down St. Bernards

PLAYA DEL REY – The Bishop Montgomery Knights effectively used the running game and controlled the clock en route to a 42-14 victory in a South Catholic League Thursday evening.

Carter London led the way for the Knights, who improved to 5-4, 2-0 in the South Catholic League. He ran for 117 yards on 27 carries and two touchdowns. Patrick Smith added 53 yards on six carries.

“We are not usually a running team,” head coach Ed Hodgkiss said, “but that was what they were giving us. I just felt like tonight the run was there.”

Senior quarterback Austin Garbe threw for 98 yards on 8 for 12 passing with two touchdowns and one interception. Both scoring passes went to Chris Hughes for 30 yards and 16 yards, respectively.

Although St Bernard’s (4-5, 0-2) couldn’t get anything going, they wouldn’t go down easily. Down 14-0, the hosts scored twice in the second quarter to close the gap to 21-14 heading into the half.

Thomas Kay took a punt and returned it for 60 yards with about 10:00 minutes to go in the first half. Kyle Harris would then make a big play to end the half, breaking many tackles along the way to the end zone, but that would be all the Vikings would score, as they would be held scoreless in the second half.

“They are a hard knock football team,” said Leon Allen, who took over the head coaching duties after former Vikings coach John Bibb stepped down to tend to personal matters. “They are much better in person than they look on film. They jumped on us 14-0 then we had to play chase for the whole game.”

St Bernard’s hosts Verbum Dei next Friday in a battle of South Catholic League winless teams. Kickoff is at 7pm

Conversely, Bishop Montgomery hosts league leader Cantwell-Sacred Heart for a chance at winning the inaugural South Catholic League championship. Kickoff is at 7pm.

“This game is a big deal for us,” Hodgkiss said. “Heading into the season, our goal is to win league. We are going to treat this game like a playoff game. After that we will see what happen, whether or not we make the playoffs.”
