What/ Why:

“Black Notes” - Original Negro Spirituals were composed of only the Black keys on a piano.

In this one-woman performance and workshop, award-winning author Mary E. Weems uses auto/ethnograpy and poetic and narrative inquiry to investigate the Black experience through a cultural lens which shifts from the personal to the political. Following the performance, workshop participants will respond to prompts and participate in a discussion designed to encourage a deeper understanding of the common ground of our humanity and the importance of empathy with other cultures.

Dr. Mary Weems is an author, poet, playwright, imagination-intellect theorist, and social/cultural foundations scholar. She is the author and/or editor of 13 books including Blackeyed: Plays and Monologues. Dr. Weems was awarded the 2015 Cleveland Arts Prize for Literature.

How: This event is free and open to the public
