Defending the Enemy: A Memoir of the Japanese War Crimes Trial

"Defending the Enemy," is a memoir by Elaine Fischel, based on service as secretary to the American lawyers hired at the request of General Douglas MacArthur, the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces during the occupation of Japan following WWII. There is very little known of this historic trial and of the heroic role played by American lawyers who regarded the war criminals as their clients. Those lawyers had a sacred mission, which was to see that the accused received a fair trial which could not have happened without their help.
