Fishing continues year round out of Marina del Rey for rock fish and sculpin but as we move deeper into spring the pelagic fish will start to migrate north.
Rick Oefinger, the owner of Marina del Rey Sportfishing, told me, “Fishing is an ideal family activity.”
In California, if you’re fishing from a boat or beach you’ll need a license. A one-day license costs $15 for a resident or visitor. The annual license expires on December 31st, so get it early.

Long time sailor Alan Gornick recently bought a 33-foot power boat. When I asked why he took such a radical tack, he explained that he was still keeping his 53-foot ketch, but the new boat had one purpose, "To kill fish. I'm going after those that are crepuscular," he told me.
He said he intended to win Santa Monica Bay's upcoming Halibut Derby. Since I've feasted on Gornick's Alaskan caught salmon, I wish him well in his quest. If you've never gone ocean fishing from a boat before, Marina del Rey Sport Fishing is a good place to begin, “We will walk you through the basics," Oefinger said. "We offer bait, tackle, cleaning and one-day fishing licenses."
