Homicide Suspect Barricades Himself In Marina Del Rey Area Home

LOS ANGELES, CA — Police arrested a man suspected in a fatal downtown shooting Tuesday after a wild pursuit that ended with him allegedly breaking into and holing up in a home in the Marina Del Rey area.

According to police the suspect abandoned his vehicle and broke into an occupied home at about 3:20 a.m. and held off a SWAT Team until they flushed him out by firing tear gas canisters.

He eventually surrendered to a SWAT team about 6 a.m. after officers surrounded the residence in the 11000 block of Barman Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. His name was not immediately released.

The SWAT team had gotten the residents out of the house around 3:20 a.m., Officer D. Orris of the LAPD Operations Center said. That left the suspect inside the house alone and the home surrounded by SWAT team officers.

"Once they determined the suspect was inside and refused to come out, they determined that they would use (tear) gas, and introduced it into the residence," LAPD Sgt. Barry Montgomery said. "There was no communication at all with SWAT officers at the scene, and the only time they had communication with him was when he signaled to them and told them he was coming out."

The chain of events began with a shooting about 11:55 p.m. Monday at Sixth Street and Maple Avenue, triggering a pursuit that ended with a crash at 12:23 a.m. around Berryman Avenue and Braddock Drive, police said.

The 36-year-old man shot downtown was taken to a hospital where he died, Orris said. His name was withheld, pending notification of his relatives.

Officers found a passenger inside the suspect's vehicle who had been shot, Montgomery said. That person was taken to a hospital, where his vital signs were stable, the sergeant said.
