Man Shoots Woman in South Bay Standoff

A Redondo Beach man allegedly shot a woman in the head and held police at bay for about 30 minutes.

A woman was shot in the head during a domestic dispute today inside a Redondo Beach home, where the suspect was holed up for about 30 minutes before surrendering to police.

Officials would only describe the woman’s gunshot wound as life threatening, said Redondo Beach Police Lt. Joe Hoffman.

Redondo Beach resident Roy Rodriguez Jr., 22, was booked at the Redondo Beach jail on suspicion of attempted murder and was being held in lieu of $500,000 bail, Hoffman said.

Officers were dispatched at about 1:30 p.m. to a home in the 2500 block of Graham Avenue on a “shots fired” call, with the caller reporting that a woman had been shot by a man inside the residence, according to Hoffman.

Officers arrived at the scene, set up a containment, and the department’s crisis negotiation team spoke to Rodriguez on the phone. He surrendered to police shortly before 2 p.m., Hoffman said. Paramedics rushed the shooting victim to an area hospital. Four other people inside the home, including a small child, escaped injury. “Although the exact relationship between the suspect and victim is yet to be determined, this is believed to be the result of a domestic incident between known individuals,” Hoffman said.
