Marina del Rey’s Opening Days are This Weekend

Make your plans now to join the formal events kicking off the sailing season.

In case you were wondering why yacht clubs in Marina del Rey had opening days Skipper Mark Robinson explained. “There are opening days in Marina del Rey – just not any closing days,” he said.

The custom dates back to colder climes. Every year when I visit Boston for Christmas I see hundreds of yachts in dry dock to protect them from the crush of sea ice. Many boats there are still shrink wrapped in hibernation, as protection against blowing snow.

The weather is delightfully different here. If you’ve ever considered joining a yacht club, opening day is a great way to get to know it. Remember that these are formal events with yachtsmen and women decked out in blue blazers, so if you go, don’t dress in a sweat suit. There’s usually a color guard, speeches, food, and libation. The pageantry is impressive especially if you’re used to seeing members in boating garb.

It is a good idea to call a yacht club first and find a member who will sponsor your attendance or ask if you'd simply be welcome to show. For a directory of local clubs, visit the Association of Santa Monica Bay Yacht Clubs to find a club that appeals to you.

Here are the clubs actively promoting their events:
