A More Democratic Bioethics Debate for Our Polarized Times

A prominent UCSD sociologist discusses how to democratize the bioethics debate in the U.S., as part of the Bioethics series hosted at LMU

In his talk –”A More Democratic Bioethics Debate for Our Polarized Times” – John H. Evans, professor of sociology at UC San Diego, will analyze the history of the bioethical debate in America and discuss how it has become the terrain of elite intellectuals rather than embracing the varied views of the public. In general, the discussion of bioethics in academic and medical settings informs policymakers and others about ethical decision-making in medicine and science, such as whether society should sanction reproductive cloning, radically extend life expectancy, or how to handle the acquisition of organs for transplant.

Evans’ 7 p.m presentation will be followed by a response from Roberto Dell’Oro, director of the LMU Bioethics Institute and professor of Theological Studies. The lecture is free and open to the public. The discussion includes a question-and-answer session, and a reception follows.
