I’ve always found boating to be romantic, especially sailing, when the only sound is the music of sea and breeze. There’s something about balancing the ebb and flow of forces as you push the bow forward that seems very sensual.
If you’ve had trouble meeting a partner of the opposite sex who shares your interests, there is a sailing group, Single Mariners, in Marina del Rey eager for your participation. A boat of your own is not needed to join.
Take a cruise. You can really take the measure of your partner on one. It gives you an opportunity to see how well you work together and how much joy you actually take in each other’s company. I wouldn’t suggest doing this with somebody you’ve only recently met, because a boat’s close quarters can make it very confining. Also, unlike leaving suddenly from a car during an argument (as I have done) it’s not recommended to exit precipitously from a boat.

Although there are other channel islands that demand a more adventurous approach, Santa Catalina is known as the island of romance. It’s not far geographically, but a world away from mainland cares. Once there you can readily share hiking and swimming. Depending on your destination, you can eat in first class restaurants, clop along in a horse drawn carriage or dance the night away.
One of the most romantic things I’ve done on Catalina is going snorkeling with my girlfriend. It’s a sensuous experience to ply the island’s warm waters watching the bright orange Garibaldi fish, and swaying kelp.

After a day sail, I like to wind down with happy hour on the boat. Not all boaters do this, but my boat my crew came to expect us lingering in the cockpit after a day of cruising. Today the practice continues as we share appetizers and wine getting to know each other better while the sun dips behind the masts in the marina.
Even if you live in the neighborhood, it’s a refreshing change to take a staycation by spending the night on a boat. I suggest begininning with a well cooked meal, accompanied by cocktails and music. Watch the moon rise. Draw your partner close to stay warm, then head below to the V berth to allow matters to develop naturally. Ultimately you’ll be lulled to sleep by the marina’s gently lapping waves.
