Runway Maintenance at LAX Means More Noisy Airplanes Overnight for Nearby Residents

LOS ANGELES, CA - Residents near Los Angeles International Airport may notice a change in overnight noise levels this week due to runway maintenance operations.

Flights at LAX generally take off and land over the ocean between midnight and 6:30 a.m. to reduce noise. On Tuesday through Thursday, however, arriving flights will continue to approach the airport from the east during those hours.

Airport officials said maintenance work will force the closure of runway 24R/6L during those hours. Coupled with the deactivation of the Instrument Landing System for runway 24L/6R, planes won't be able to land overnight on any of the north airfield runways.

All incoming aircraft will, therefore, be landing on the south runways, continuing to approach from the east. Takeoffs will continue to be made to the west, over the ocean.

"As a result, persons living near the airport may notice a change in aircraft flight activity and associated noise," according to the airport.
