Search Resumes for Boater Missing in Deadly Accident that Killed Son of Former 49ers' President

The search for a boater who went missing after two vessels collided off Santa Catalina Island, killing one man and injuring three other people, resumed morning, authorities said.

The search had been called off about 2 p.m. Monday, according to the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.

Family members identified the man killed as 26-year-old Michael Harris of San Francisco, a former student at the University of San Diego and son of Peter Harris, who was the 49ers’ president and CEO from 2000 to 2004.

Three other people were injured and another remained missing as a result of the crash, which happened about 1:20 a.m. Sunday about a quarter-mile northeast of Casino Point. The missing man has not been identified by authorities.

The U.S. Coast Guard received a report that a dinghy with five people aboard collided with another vessel, the U.S. Coast Guard’s SondraKay Kneen said.

One passenger aboard the dinghy was confirmed dead. Two suffered minor injuries and one person suffered a head injury. The injured, including Michael Harris’ girlfriend, were taken to UCLA Medical Center.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau deployed divers and an underwater sonar scanner and was assisting county lifeguards in an effort to find the missing boater.
