Sleeping Child Hit in the Head With Stray Bullet

Am 8-year-old boy is in critical condition after being struck with a stray bullet in his sleep. The shooter is on the loose.

A stray bullet fired by someone arguing with a man inside his Del Rey home wounded the intended victim’s 8-year-old son in the head as he slept, police said today.

The shooting happened in the 11000 block of Wagner Street just before midnight Sunday, said Los Angeles Police Department Sgt. Patricia Suarez.

“Multiple shots were fired ...,” Suarez said. “The boy was asleep when one shot struck him in the head.” The boy’s mother also was in the home at the time, Suarez said.

The boy was taken to a hospital, where he underwent surgery, and he was listed in critical but stable condition, said LAPD Officer Liliana Preciado.

According to the preliminary investigation, a male suspect entered the residence and became involved in a dispute with the boy’s father, during which the suspect fired shots at the man and fled, Preciado said.

A stray bullet hit the boy, who was not the intended target, Preciado said. No description of the suspect was immediately released.
