St. Bernard Football Kicks Off Sept. 2

Larry Muno's Vikings will travel to El Segundo for the season opener.

The CIF Southern Section schools have finalized their schedules for the 2011 football season, and will open with a zero-week game at El Segundo High School on September 2.

It will be the Vikings' first game under new head coach , who replaced after St. Bernard posted a 3-7 record and finished sixth in the Del Rey League last season.

St. Bernard faces a tough opponent out of the gate as El Segundo dealt the Vikings a 55-20 defeat in last season's opener in Playa del Rey.

Playing a zero-week game allows the Vikings a bye week later in the season, and it falls between game seven at Bosco Tech and game eight at home against Verbum Dei.

Of St. Bernard's five league losses last season, two were by one point and a third was by six points, so the Vikings were competitive even in defeat.

The toughest game will be the league finale against the defending champion Bishop Montgomery, which beat St. Bernard 65-28 on its way to a 9-2 record last season.

Dual-threat quarterback is expecting a productive senior year after leading the league with 2,171 passing yards and 24 touchdowns last season.

Should St. Bernard qualify for the postseason it will compete in the CIF Northwest Division playoffs.
