Turtle-Racing Brennan's Re-Opening In Marina Del Rey

The bar with the infamous turtle races is re-opening with a re-modeled menu and space.

MARINA DEL REY, CA – The infamous turtles (and turtle racing) will soon be back at Marina Del Rey's iconic pub, Brennan's. After remodeling the space and giving the 45-year-old bar some love, Brennan's will reopen on Dec. 19 with new menus, a new look, and the same beloved turtles.

Artisanal Brewers Collective (ABC) assumed ownership of Brennan's earlier this year, so beer will be a central focus of the bar program, with a tap list of 16 rotating beers. A variety of different beers will be available, including local brewery El Segundo Citra Pale Ale, California-based Modern Times Critical Band IPA and The Bruery’s Autumn Maple; an Irish Dry Stout and an Irish Red Ale will always be available on draft as well. There will also be signature cocktails that pay homage to Brennan's Irish heritage, and an extensive Irish whiskey list featured above the bar taps.

“It is amazing how many people have heard of Brennan’s, no matter what part of the city they live in! The space has always had a certain magnetism that has led to so many memories for each person who has visited,” says Tony Yanow, an ABC founder. “I am so excited to be a part of the team that reinvigorates this local favorite.”

The bar menu will have options for the adventurous and traditional bar patrons alike – with appetizers like Mushroom Paté, Chicken Liver Mousse, a variety of pizzas (with vegan options), salads, and entreé selections, there's something for everyone.

The space was redesigned by Ricki Kline + Design to be more open and airy, with a new back bar, marble bar tops, and a double-sided beer display. The patio will have striped seating, a nod to the turtle races. Those who were drawn to the turtle residents, some of whom have lived at Brennan’s for 20 years, can look forward to seeing them once again upon reopening. The turtles will have an updated and expanded living area with space to swim in between once-a-month races.

Turtle racing will start again on opening night, and will be held every third Thursday of every month from 9:00 p.m. on. Guests are encouraged to arrive early to read up on each turtle’s back story and stats before choosing their favorite green racer. As always, proceeds from the races will be donated to local animal protection organizations.

Brennan’s will be open seven days a week from 4:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m., opening for lunch starting on Jan. 2. For more information, visit Brennan’s website or follow along on Instagram @turtleraces Twitter @turtleracesLA and Facebook.
