MARTINEZ, CA — A parking maneuver gone wrong sent a vehicle into a Safeway wall Wednesday afternoon, toppling an ice machine that injured an 71-year-old customer inside the store, police said.
Officers responded about 3:46 p.m. to the Safeway at 6688 Alhambra Ave. after a vehicle struck the east side of the building near the north entrance and exit, according to the Martinez Police Department.
Police said a 76-year-old driver told officers she confused the brake and gas pedals while parking, causing the vehicle to jump a curb, plow through several potted plants and crash into the building, according to reports.
The impact knocked over an ice machine, which struck a 71-year-old woman shopping inside, authorities said.
The customer fell, hit her head and was taken by ambulance to John Muir Medical Center in Concord as a precaution, according to reports.
The driver was not injured.
