We Need Pocket Protectors
I have to be honest, I get a little nervous sometimes sitting in the new street pockets on Main Street with cars going by feet away.
I think it would be a good idea to install steel pipes on the corners of the new street pockets to protect people from cars or trucks. As it is now they only have a light railing fence separating people eating from traffic.
Some front doors to places have them to protect cars from crashing through. Pillars have them to protect the pillar from a car hitting it... They also use them to protect many things from cars, stopping a car before it can crash into something more fragile or important, in this case the new street pockets and people.
With warmer weather coming soon, and people eating outside more, I think now is the time to address this. The Street Pockets will be loaded with people soon, and we can help avoid a tragedy possibly.

They don't have to be a bright yellow as they usually are. They could blend them in better, make them dark with reflectors on them so cars see them? Maybe even have people paint them with artwork?
I have seen them with a pre-drilled holes in the road, and are easy to put in and take out, as pockets may move. I believe they also fill them with concrete to make them more sturdy. They also use other things to stop cars like large stones, or, like in front of Fry's Electronics in Concord, huge round concrete things. Some are eye sores. But some are done creatively and aesthetically.

All it would take is one car or truck to go off track and into one of the new pockets and possibly hit people. A car would go right through the railing easy, backing up, or if it was a big truck coming around a corner and going fast. A drunk driver or something?
I am sure others have thought of, of having those protective steel pipes on each corner of each pocket they make to stop a car should it hit a pocket before it can hit people. I know this is a touchy subject and also the pocket issue was controversial, but I think it is important. I love them btw, I just want to be protected from traffic going by just feet away.
I'm not sure how much they cost. Can't be that much. But I think it would be money well spent, especially if it saved lives should a car or truck veer off the road and into people eating. I used a picture of street pockets with photo shopped pipes to protect them. As I said I don't think they have to stick out a bright yellow, and could blend in better. I think it would be really cool, as I said, to have local artists paint them maybe?
