Brush Fire Along I-680 In Martinez Jams Traffic

The fire broke out in grass along the right shoulder of northbound I-680, snarling traffic as fire crews responded.

MARTINEZ, CA — A brush fire was jamming traffic Wednesday morning along Interstate Highway 680 in Martinez. The fire was first reported at about 8:12 a.m. Wednesday in grass on the right-hand shoulder of the freeway on the hillside south of Pacheco Boulevard, according the California Highway Patrol.

As Contra Costa Fire crews responded, CHP was reporting a severe traffic alert as of 9 a.m. on northbound I-680 in Martinez, south of Pacheco Boulevard and just north of state Highway 4.

At about 10 a.m., the two right lanes of I-680 were still blocked at the fire and motorists were advised to expect delays and to use alternate routes to avoid the area, according to Caltrans.

Firefighters soon gained control of the fire, and all lanes were reopened as of 10:20 a.m., according to CHP.
