AHS Drama presents Kate Hamill's "Pride and Prejudice" for four performances only Nov 12-14 at the AHS Performing Arts Building in Martinez
Far from a traditional retelling, this quick-paced 2017 adaptation of the English literary classic is full of modern sensibilities in an Austenian setting. The award-winning Hamill uses farce and physical comedy to highlight the absurdity of love in the Regency era marriage market…and anywhere patriarchal structures loom.
The spirited and sharp-tongued Lizzy Bennet has sworn to forgo marriage. Her planned spinsterhood exasperates her busybody mother whose sole and frantic purpose is to marry off her daughters to wealthy bachelors as a result of Mr. Bennet’s failures to secure the family’s financial future. Lizzy’s resolve remains as she meets and butts heads with the very wealthy, incredibly arrogant, and usually socially awkward Mr. Darcy.
Also in this madcap marriage predicament are the three other Bennet daughters - the kind and lovely Jane; the impulsive Lydia, and the oddball Mary - along with their friend Charlotte, a practical woman of middle class means. Among rigid rules of etiquette and stiff societal structures, each young lady dares to make her own unique and hilarious play to seize romance, security, or love. At the center of these games, Lizzy and Darcy clash in a battle of pride and intellect as reluctant attraction forces them to confront their prejudices.
AHS’s Pride and Prejudice is directed and produced by Ms. Emma Malki. Creating the Pride and Prejudice world under the technical direction of Mrs. Sara Stafford and the costuming direction of Ms. Sara Bragg are 30 technical crew members and stagecraft artisans.
AHS Drama Club’s cast and crew is excited to bring these characters to effervescent new life while remaining true to the wit and heart of the original story. The community is invited to attend and enjoy as literature’s most famous tale of finding your match lights up Alhambra’s stage and proves that nothing turns us into greater fools than love.
Performances will be held Thursday, November 12th and Friday, November 13th at 7pm with matinee and evening showings at 1pm and 7pm on Saturday, November 14th. Ticket prices range from $9 to $12 and are available on GoFan or ahsarts.org or at the door immediately preceding each show.
