Caring for Adults Who Can't Care for Themselves - Information Sources at the Contra Costa County Public Law Library
Conservatorships
The Contra Costa County Public Law Library, with branches in Martinez, Richmond and Pittsburg, has information to guide you in caring for adults who can't care for themselves. In California, the legal proceeding for appointment to be responsible for another adult is called a conservatorship. The Library has a free brochure, "Conservatorship Resources", identifying books, workshops, websites and other information sources, such as "California Conservatorship Practice" and "The Caregiver Companion".
The Library's Forms page (http://www.cccpllib.org/forms/html) includes links to the necessary court forms under Probate, Conservatorship. The Library's Self-Help Resources page (http://www.cccpllib.org/self-helps.html), under Probate, has links to websites with information about conservatorships, including the types of conservatorships, the duties of the conservator, and who can file for conservatorship. You can also find out about conservatorships at this website: http://www.cccba.org/community/free-legal-workshops/conservatorships.php.
There are two workshops available regarding conservatorships. First, "How to Establish Conservatorship of a person", which is usually held the first Monday of each month, provides information about the process and how to fill out the required court forms. Second, there are scheduled one-day workshops on "How to Be a Conservator", required by the Court for persons appointed as conservators. Please contact the Library Director, Carey Rowan, directly at (925) 646-2783 to ask about the workshops.
