Fellow Fire Briefly Threatens Homes In Martinez

Multiple resources, including Cal Fire air tankers, responded and quickly contained the blaze that may have been sparked by fireworks.

MARTINEZ, CA — Firefighters with the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District and Cal Fire quickly contained a vegetation fire that briefly threatening homes Friday afternoon in Martinez. The blaze in the Glen Frazer area just off state Highway 4 may have been sparked by fireworks, officials with Con Fire reported. At 12:49 p.m., the fire in the 2700 block of Franklin Canyon Road near Good Fellow Drive was 5-6 acres in size and was threatening structures, officials said on Twitter.

By 1 p.m., multiple resources, including Cal Fire air tankers, were either already on scene or en route to the blaze as it produced smoke visible from SR-4.

Crews made quick work of containing the blaze — dubbed the Fellow Fire — and by 1:12 p.m., it was 24 acres in size but 75-percent contained.

Just before 1:30 p.m., Con Fire officials reported the fire was fully contained at 24 acres and was no longer threatening homes.

Firefighters were expected to remain on scene for at least a few more hours.
