Level 1 Contra Costa County Alert Due To Refinery Odors

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA — The City of Martinez reported a County Warning System Level 1 alert, and reports of petroleum smell from the PBF Energy refinery.

According to city officials, Contra Costa County Health is actively evaluating the situation and will release additional information as it becomes available

City staff said they will continue to share updates from County Health and other official sources

Residents in nearby neighborhoods have reported strong, foul-smelling odors, though officials have not yet released details on the source or any potential health risks.

The Benicia Fire Department said the agency is aware of an odor being reported throughout the city.
The odor is primarily related to normal operations at the Valero Refinery, but has been more noticeable recently due to current wind and weather conditions.

Benicia firefighters are using portable air monitoring equipment to check air quality in neighborhoods across the city. There have been no readings detected above air quality standards.

The Deputy Health Officer of Solano County Public Health has determined that a shelter-in-place is not required. However, some residents are sensitive or susceptible to negative health effects.

Anyone experiencing symptoms such as coughing or throat irritation, should close their doors and windows and remain indoors. Anyone experiencing worsening or persistent symptoms should seek medical attention.
