Not All Handbags Are Created Equal

When was the last time that you happened upon a dusty overlooked treasure for sale? You know, the kind of treasure that you can find in one of those little out-of-the-way shops.

If you are anything like me, the thrill of the “hunt” is a large part of scoring a great deal. One of the best downtown Martinez finds for me has to be my genuine baby alligator 1960s handbag from Alley Cats. [PETA people don't worry, this bag was bagged before political correctness took over.] This beautiful little number is still in wonderful condition complete with the Joseph Magnin label. How much…you might ask? How does $20 sound? Granted, it was sold “as is” because it was missing the handle. I saw the quality and didn’t let a little thing like that deter me for a second. Truth-be-told, I couldn't get my $20 bill out fast enough. Actually, the solution was simple. I purchased a remarkably close matching belt at Macy’s. Just as I thought, Pablo over at Carlos Shoe Repair on Main Street, was able to restore it to its former glory. Online research revealed the value to be between $200 and $250 without the repairs. However, I defy anyone to look at this fashionista’s dream and tell me it isn’t worth at least that. Not bad for a few minutes of visually scanning the room and zeroing in on a dusty little item on the upper shelf. Score!
