Not All Handbags Are Created Equal

When was the last time that you happened upon an overlooked treasure for sale? You know the sort of treasure that you sometimes see in a little out-of-the-way shop.

If you are anything like me, the thrill of the “hunt” is a large part of scoring a great deal. One of my best finds has to be the circa 1960s genuine baby alligator handbag discovered in Alley Cats on Main Street. [Relax PETA people; this bag was bagged before political correctness took over the world.] Actually, this beautiful little number is in wonderful condition, complete with the Joseph Magnin label. How much…you might ask? How does $20 sound? Yep. You heard me right. Granted, it was sold “as is” because it was missing the handle. Anyone could see the quality and needless to say, I didn’t let a little thing like that deter me for a second. Truth be known, I couldn't get my $20 bill out fast enough.

So now what? I have a great looking handbag without a handle. Well the solution was quite simple. Macy's carried a remarkably close matching belt. Lucky me. And just as I thought, Pablo at Carlos Shoe Repair, also on Main Street, was able to restore it to its former glory.

Online research revealed the value to be between $200 and $250 without repairs. However, I defy anyone to look at this fashionista’s dream and tell me it doesn't look like it is worth at least that.  Actual value aside, I love my little handbag "created" for about $60 and when all is said and done, that's what really matters.

Not bad for a few minutes of visually scanning the room and zeroing in on a dusty little item on the upper shelf. Score!

So, the next time you find yourself in downtown Martinez, allow enough time for a leisurely stroll through the wide variety of specialty shops. I can confidently assure you, there is something for every sort of bargain hunter imaginable.
