Search Of Delta Waters For Missing Boater Continues

A San Francisco man was boating with friends when he went swimming but did not resurface, the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office says.

SACRAMENTO-SAN JOAQUIN DELTA, CA — The search was continuing Friday morning for a boater from San Francisco who went missing Thursday in the waters of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta north of Webb Tract in Contra Costa County.

The search for 27-year-old Umut Felik began around 10:30 a.m. Thursday in an area of the San Joaquin River that is north of Bethel Island and southeast of Rio Vista. The Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office received a report that Felik, who was in the area boating with friends, was swimming when he apparently had trouble staying above the water, according to sheriff's office Spokesman Jimmy Lee.

"At one point he went underwater and did not resurface," Lee said. "His friends on a boat went into the water to search for him but were not able to find him. They reported the incident to the Sheriff's Office."

The sheriff's Marine Patrol Unit responded and, with the assistance of personnel from Solano County, Sacramento County, San Joaquin County and the U.S. Coast Guard, began searching the waters for Felik.

A search of the area with sonar was suspended at about 8 p.m. Thursday, but resumed Friday morning, Lee said.
