Mathers said the Martinez man and the Oregon teen met and struck up a relationship online on a “social media chat site.”

The girl’s mother was unaware of the relationship, the sergeant said.

Police said the case is a reminder of the importance of parents talking to their children about Internet use and access to social media sites.
