Scenic Fire: Containment Up, Evacuation Orders Lifted

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA — Firefighters on Thursday stopped a fast-moving wildfire just short of the town of Port Costa.

The Scenic Fire broke out at 2:24 p.m. Thursday at 166 Carquinez Scenic Drive, northwest of Martinez in an unincorporated area of the county near Port Costa and Crockett.

As of 8:42 p.m., the wildfire grew to an estimated 108 acres and was 50 percent contained, according to Cal Fire.

Crews with the Crockett-Carquinez Fire Department, Costa County Fire Protection District and Cal Fire were among those battling the blaze. Firefighters were expected to remain on scene overnight and into Friday.

"Hand crews and dozers are hard at work," the Crockett-Carquinez Fire Department tweeted at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. "Please avoid the area. Carquinez Scenic between Crockett and Port Costa remains closed. All evacuation orders are lifted."

Evacuation orders and road closures were in briefly in place for the vicinity of Carquinez Scenic Drive at Canyon Lake Drive, 1 mile east of Crockett, and all residents of the area were encouraged to be prepared to evacuate.

The following message was posted to the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Community Warning System but has since been removed:

"This is a message from the Crockett Fire Department. Due to a FIRE at Bull Valley Station Area, residents in the area of Carquinez Scenic Dr, Port Costa Reservoir St/4WD Road should prepare to evacuate. Zone CCC-109 which is NORTH of Reservoir Street, Canyon Lake Drive, SOUTH of Prospect Avenue, EAST of Carquinez Scenic Drive, WEST of Railroad Avenue, South Avenue. This is an evacuation warning. No evacuation has been ordered at this time, but it is possible one may become necessary. You should prepare now in case an evacuation is ordered. Gather any important items you could carry with you, including medications, baby supplies, money, important papers, and photos. Locate any pets or animals and be prepared to cage or leash them. If you require additional time to evacuate, you should leave now. You will receive further instructions if an evacuation becomes necessary. If you need additional time to evacuate, you should treat this as an evacuation order- Take McEwen Road towards HWY 4 and avoid Carquinez Scenic."
