Woman Found Dead In Canal ID'd By Coroner
The victim's body was discovered Monday in Oakley, officials said.

OAKLEY, CA – A woman whose body was found late Monday afternoon in a canal in Oakley has been identified by the Contra Costa County coroner's office as 45-year-old Nidya Chavez.
The body was reported to authorities at 4:37 p.m. Monday in a canal in the area of Rose Avenue and Main Street.
Oakley police said investigators believe Chavez, a transient, probably climbed a fence to the canal to get water and fell in.

While the water in the canal may appear calm, it is moving quickly beneath the surface because it is being pumped, according to police.
Anyone who may have seen someone near the canal fence or climb over it is asked to contact Oakley police at opd@ci.oakley.ca.us.
