• Judge sinks TIDE Rising's lawsuit against high school district (almanacnews.com) — A federal judge has dismissed parents’ civil-rights lawsuit seeking to keep TIDE Academy in Menlo Park from closing, clearing the way for Sequoia Union High School District to move ahead with its plan. District leaders say shifting TIDE’s programs to Woodside High will save $14 million, but families of the small, specialized campus worry about losing a setting where many struggling students have thrived.    

• San Mateo County first in Bay Area to ban sale of kratom (almanacnews.com) — San Mateo County has just banned the sale of kratom, a move prompted in part by a Menlo Park smoke shop advertising the substance and concerns that local youth could buy it there. The new ordinance makes selling kratom or related products a misdemeanor and threatens retailers’ tobacco and other county-issued licenses, while state lawmakers continue debating broader regulations.    

• U.S. Military Chaplain Hopefuls Turn Out in Record Numbers (patheos.com) — St. Patrick’s Seminary in Menlo Park just hosted a record 38 young men discerning service as Catholic U.S. military chaplains, highlighting the city’s role in addressing a national chaplain shortage. Over four days of prayer, talks, and guidance, participants explored both priestly life and military service, with leaders outlining paths into the chaplain corps and sharing stories of heroic chaplains.
