MENLO PARK, CA — A high-speed pursuit tied to an assault with a deadly weapon investigation ended in a crash on the eastbound Dumbarton Bridge Wednesday afternoon, injuring a Menlo Park police officer and backing up traffic near the toll plaza, according to a report by NBC Bay Area.
Earlier Wednesday, the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office issued a be-on-the-lookout alert for a vehicle connected to an assault with a deadly weapon investigation in unincorporated Redwood City.
The vehicle was spotted near Bay and Willow Roads in Menlo Park, where officers said they attempted to stop the driver. The suspect fled, and a pursuit followed through Menlo Park and onto the Dumbarton Bridge, NBC Bay Area reported.
During the chase, a Menlo Park police officer was involved in a crash with another vehicle on the bridge. The officer was transported to a hospital with injuries of unknown severity. The other driver was not hurt.
The California Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
The suspect continued toward Fremont, and East Bay agencies were notified to be on the lookout for the vehicle, NBC Bay Area reported.
Eastbound traffic on the Dumbarton Bridge came to a standstill just west of the toll plaza following the crash, according to the Menlo Park Police Department. Emergency crews responded to the scene and a tow truck was en route.
Drivers were advised to avoid the eastbound bridge for approximately one hour as detours were put in place.
