MENLO PARK, CA — Facebook is changing its corporate name to Meta, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced Thursday during Facebook Connect, the company’s virtual reality and augmented reality conference.

The decision came as Facebook grapples with criticism about the potential harmful effect of its products on users’ mental health and alleged failures to address misinformation after a whistleblower leaked internal documents earlier this month.

The Facebook platform will become a subsidiary of Meta, along with Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp.

Zuckerberg said the name change aligns with the company’s efforts to grow the “metaverse,” which has been described by Zuckerberg as a virtual 3D environment that can connect people for work and play.

The company said it will begin trading under the new stock ticker symbol “MVRS” on Dec. 1.
