Menlo's Price Advances to State

Coach applauds her strategy.

Menlo School sophomore Maddy Price took third place at the Central Coast Section 400-meter final Friday at Gilroy High to earn a trip to the state meet next weekend.

She next races in the CIF state meet June 1-2 at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Clovis.

Finishing in 56.68 seconds, Price topped last week's time at the CCS finals of 57.38.

Her strategy worked: She had a fast start and with 120 meters to go, she was behind by at least 5 meters.

"Maddy ran a smart race... She stayed relaxed and just took the third place down," said Menlo assistant coach Jorge Chen, who specializes in middle distance. "She's looking really good, and we won't be surprised if she hits low 56 at state.

"Maddy is one of those rare athletes who is driven, and won't give up until she gets it," Chen added.
