Mountain Lion Crawls Under Residential Gate On The Peninsula, Caught On Camera

PORTOLA VALLEY, CA — San Mateo County officials reported Wednesday a "confirmed" mountain lion sighting on the Peninsula that happened this week. The animal was apparently spotted headed into a residential area.
According to county officials, the incident happened overnight Saturday into Sunday morning.
"On September 9th and 10th in the early morning hours, a confirmed sighting of a Mountain Lion was caught on video on the Shady Trail in Portola Valley crawling underneath a residential gate," officials said in an emailed alert. "Please be aware."

- Do not feed deer. It is illegal in California and it will attract mountain lions.
- If you see a mountain lion DO NOT APPROACH IT, especially one that is feeding or with offspring. Most mountain lions will try to avoid confrontation.
- Keep a close watch on small children when hiking or traveling in or about wooded areas.
- If you encounter a mountain lion, do not run; instead, face the animal, make noise and try to look bigger by waving your arms; throw rocks or other objects. Pick up small children.
