Stanford University received a record breaking 38,828 applications for undergraduate admission this year and offered admission to 2,210 high
school students, university officials said today.

The university received more than 2,000 more applications this year than last year, when there were 36,632 applicants, according to Richard Shaw, dean of admission and financial aid.

"The most exciting part of our review is the opportunity to consider the world's most exceptional students," Shaw said. "The most daunting challenge is to select a relatively small number from among the most competitive and exceptional group of candidates."

The students offered admissions include 750 accepted last December through the early action program. Students admitted under the early and regular decision admission programs have until May 1 to accept Stanford's offer.
