Vehicle Slams Into SMC Utility Pole: Power Out, Road Closed

BREAKING: Preliminary reports indicate at least one person was hospitalized.

PORTOLA VALLEY, CA — A vehicle slammed into a utility pole in unincorporated San Mateo County on Monday, sending at least one person to the hospital and prompting the hours-long closure of an area roadway, according to CHP and SMC reports. The crash was first reported at 1:46 p.m. along Los Trancos Road.

The pole came crashing down onto the vehicle following the crash, and wires were reported on the roadway, according to preliminary California Highway Patrol reports.

As of 4 p.m., though the vehicle was removed, the roadway remained blocked. Officials with the San Mateo County Alert System announced a closure for an unknown duration.

"Los Trancos Road will be closed from Alpine Road to the fire trail at Valley Oak Street per PG&E," the agency said. "Wires are down in the roadway due to a traffic accident... PG&E will be working to repair the downed wires and restore the power to the Los Trancos neighborhood."

Officials suggested using Alpine Road to Indian Crossing and Oak Valley Street as a detour.
