MILLBRAE, CA — Drivers could soon have to pay to park in parts of downtown Millbrae as the city develops a parking management program aimed at freeing up spaces for shoppers and visitors.
The city's Downtown Parking Management Program proposes paid parking on busy commercial blocks and in certain public lots, along with updated parking regulations and enforcement technology.
City officials are considering pay stations, mobile payment apps, digital permits and license plate recognition technology to streamline parking and enforcement.
The City Council approved measures authorizing paid parking earlier this year but has not finalized rates, enforcement hours, permit fees or which streets and lots would require payment.
The proposal also includes expanded residential and employee permit programs to help preserve parking availability in nearby neighborhoods.
According to the city, the goal is to increase parking turnover and make downtown businesses more accessible rather than generate revenue for the general fund. Parking revenue would instead support management, maintenance and enforcement through a dedicated fund.
Millbrae held a parking technology open house Thursday, giving residents an opportunity to test equipment and payment options from potential vendors. The city has not announced the results of that feedback.
Residents and business owners can provide input through the city's parking management webpage or email parking@ci.millbrae.ca.us.
