MILL VALLEY, CA — City council is formally recognizing one of Mill Valley’s longest-running sports traditions: the Marin Championships tennis tournament, now in its 50th year and scheduled to start June 2.
The City Council approved a proclamation honoring the Marin Championships, a nationally recognized Level 2 tournament sanctioned by the U.S. Tennis Association and approved by the International Tennis Federation.
The event, formerly known as the Marin Senior Championships, has been hosted by the Mill Valley Tennis Club for five consecutive decades.
Councilmember Stephen Burke said that this year’s tournament features a purse of about $25,000 and draws accomplished adult players from across the United States and abroad.
The proclamation credits the tournament with enhancing Mill Valley’s reputation “as a premier destination for national level athletic competition” and highlights partnerships with the Club at Harbor Point, Belvedere Tennis Club, and previously Scott Valley Swimming and Tennis Club. Councilmembers said that cooperation among local clubs has been vital to keeping the event strong.
Mayor Max Perrey said his own family’s history in Mill Valley is tied to the tennis club. He told colleagues that his grandparents were members in 1959 when they decided to buy a house uphill from the club, a home where both his mother and he later grew up. He said that history deepened his “appreciation and admiration for everyone involved.”
The proclamation stated that Mill Valley “recognizes and celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Marin Championships, and commends the Mill Valley Tennis Club and its partners for their enduring contributions to tennis, sportsmanship, and community life,” extending the city’s appreciation to volunteers and organizers whose work has made the tournament “a point of pride for the city over the past half century.”
The 2026 Marin Championships are scheduled for June 2–7.
