Major Roadwork To Impact Traffic Announced In Mill Valley

MILL VALLEY, CA — Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians should prepare for traffic delays in Mill Valley as several summer road improvement projects get underway in the coming weeks.

The most significant project will replace aging guardrails along East Blithedale Avenue between Monday and Aug. 17.

The $1 million project, funded through the Highway Safety Improvement Program, will replace three deteriorating wooden guardrails with new metal barriers near the Whole Foods shopping center.

During portions of construction, the four-lane roadway will be reduced to one lane in each direction between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Sections of the protected bike lane will also close, requiring cyclists to merge with vehicle traffic or detour behind the shopping center.

The city is also preparing to resurface Miller Avenue and 38 other streets as part of its annual pavement maintenance program. Slurry seal work is expected to begin in mid-July and continue through the end of August.

Roads undergoing treatment will be closed for four to eight hours while the sealant cures, and driveway access will be temporarily restricted. Residents are encouraged to watch for construction notices and avoid parking on affected streets during scheduled work.

In addition, the City Council is expected to consider two transportation initiatives at its Monday meeting.

One would create a pilot program to help property owners pay for sidewalk repairs, while the other would test safety improvements at the intersection of Miller Avenue, Montford Avenue and La Goma Street. The proposed redesign would narrow the intersection to reduce conflicts between drivers, pedestrians and cyclists. If approved, the temporary improvements could be installed by Labor Day.

Mill Valley also recently received national recognition from the advocacy group PeopleForBikes, which highlighted the city's recent efforts to improve bicycle safety and mobility. The organization named Mill Valley one of eight communities nationwide to watch in its 2026 city ratings.
