MILL VALLEY, CA — The Mill Valley Police Department is warning residents about a phone scam in which callers pose as police officers or sheriff's deputies to pressure victims into handing over money or gift cards.
Police said the department has received numerous reports from community members about fraudulent calls from suspects claiming to be law enforcement. The callers attempt to extort victims by demanding money or gift cards.
Officials urged anyone who receives a suspicious call or message claiming to be from law enforcement not to provide money or personal information.
Instead, residents should hang up and verify the call by contacting the Mill Valley Police Department directly at 415-389-4100.
Police noted they will never call residents to demand payment, collect fines or request gift cards, wire transfers or other forms of payment.
They also encourage residents to check in with family members, friends and neighbors who may be more vulnerable to scams.
