The arrest came just weeks after the official took the city's top administrative job.

SAUSALITO, CA — The Sausalito City Manager was arrested Saturday morning on suspicion of felony burglary, just weeks after taking the city's top administrative job, according to city officials.

Elaine Forbes, 53, was arrested around 6:50 a.m. by Marin County Sheriff's Office deputies at the Sausalito Yacht Harbor and booked into the Marin County Jail on a felony burglary charge, officials said.

In a statement released Sunday, Forbes' family said she is experiencing a mental health crisis and asked the public not to rush to judgment as she seeks legal and medical care.

The Marin Independent Journal reported that authorities found Forbes inside a yacht that didn’t belong to her.

Her bail was set at $50,000.

The arrest came after the Sausalito City Council approved a leave of absence for Forbes during a July 16 meeting.

"This is a difficult development for our City staff and our community," Sausalito city officials wrote in a statement. "Because this is now an active and ongoing investigation by the Marin County Sheriff’s Office, the City will not comment on the specific allegations."

Forbes began serving as Sausalito's city manager on July 1 after previously working as San Francisco's Port Director for nine years.

The Sausalito City Council has scheduled a closed session hearing for Tuesday to discuss the job performance of its city manager.
