Danny Lau Selected as New School Board Member

Newest member of the Milpitas Board of Education is sworn in Tuesday night.

Five finalists for school board were interviewed on Tuesday night for an open seat vacated by . But in the end, only one could be selected.

Members of the Board of Education interviewed one candidate after the other—and scored each of their answers. They selected Lau as the highest-ranking candidate based on the point system.

During the moment when the scores were being tallied, Bill Foulk, clerk of the governing board, said, "I just wanted to personally thank you to have the courage to apply."

After longtime member and former president Mike Mendizabal resigned mid-term on Jan. 31, the Board of Education to fill the vacancy—as an alternative to a costly election.

Lau, a 30-year Milpitas resident, works as a program manager in high tech.

During the interview, he said he has three children, two who have graduated from the district and one who attends Russell Middle School.  

He said he wanted to improve communication between the schools and the parents.

When asked about the relationship between the board and district, he said he believed it should include mutual trust, respect and support for each other.

"It's time to give back," he said. "It's time to support the community."
