Former Merryhill Student Wins International Competition in Berlin

Avi Goel placed first in the individual Junior Varsity competition during the inaugural International Geography Bee World Championships

Former Merryhill Elementary & Middle School student Avi Goel recently placed first in the overall individual Junior Varsity competition at the inaugural International Geography Bee (IGB) World Championships, which were held last month in Berlin, Germany. More than 123 young geographers from around the world attended the first-ever competition, which is organized by International Academic Competitions – an organization that administers academic competitions for primary and secondary students from around the world. Goel, who resides in San Jose and currently attends Silvercreek High School, qualified to compete internationally after placing second in the Junior Varsity Division National Championship for the IGB last year.

The International Geography Bee is a new worldwide geography quiz competition for primary and secondary students in five regions, including Asia, Australia and New Zealand, Canada, Europe and the U.S.
